Slightly Better Than Baby Food?

Standard

In my never ending search to find the perfect food that won’t make my stomach hurt, give me side aches, etc.  I recently tried These smooshy power bar fruit thingies.  I first had the blueberry banana version and I felt pretty great on my run shortly after!  So I got some other kinds and felt great again.  Then when REI started their sale last week I went in to grab more and saw these Peter Rabbit Organic smooshies (if Gu can be the name of a sports thing, then I dub these officially smooshies).  I read the ingredients in the Power Bar version and realized they are really just fruit and not organic and the Peter Rabbits were on sale for less so….. why not?

photo 1-27

It was a little embarrassing when the cashier was like “you must have a bunch of kids!” because I was buying literally 25 Peter Rabbit smooshies.  Then I realized they say on the package that they are good for anyone over 6 months old.  Ok so now I’m buying baby food to eat.  But why is that?  They are the same as the Power Bar option, plus, score, organic!  How come I’m an athlete when I buy the Power Bar version and clearly buying for babies with the other?  Branding is the reason.  Branding is so weirdly ingrained in us.

Well bottom line is that I don’t care!! I will from now on be buying organic smooshy baby food because it’s awesome right before a run.  Also it’s kind of delicious.  Babies are smart to eat this food.  Too bad they can’t go on a run after.

Summer Running Clothes, What to Wear?

Standard

I am very much a running capris person, but I also live in California and I’m horrible at getting up early to run when it’s cool out so I have to go out of my comfort zone and wear shorts to run.

photo 1-13

Shorts always bother me in ways capris don’t.  They ride up, rub on your legs with EVERY step which makes my legs itchy and uncomfortable.  They are just not ideal.  So I decided to try a few different things this summer and review each as I wear them.  To start here’s my line-up of stuff to try:

Let’s start with the dreaded shorts.  I found a few styles on sale on Brooks’ website so I decided to start there.  The first pair are short.  Really short.  There is no chance I will wear these for anything other than a super hot day run.  And even then….. I am going to be thinking about them a lot while I’m wearing them I think.  They are the D’Lite 2.5″ shorts from Brooks.

The middle pair are decently long and that waistband seems to keep them from riding too much.  Also I’m hoping that the seams aren’t too chafey ( I make up words when there is not the proper word already in existence).  They are the D’Lite 4″ shorts from Brooks.

The last pair are spandex (cringe) but I figure if I just tell myself they’re short capris it won’t be too bad.  The reason I want to try them is that I’m hoping they will have the benefits of capris, less moving/chafing, with the benefit of shorts, not so warm.  First I just have to actually wear them for a run then I’ll let you know.  They are the Infiniti 7″ short tight III.

On to tops.  This is my favorite thing I’ve found so far.  Again by Brooks.  I found the two on the right on a good sale from REI outlet online so you can check that out if you like them.  They are SUPER light weight and the material is weirdly cold.  Almost like it is re-cooling itself.  That is not true of course but I love them.  The only downside is they are slightly see-through, but for those not comfortable in just a sports bra like me, and needs the lightest possible shirt made, this is the one.

Here you can see the sheerness:

And one more option.  I hit up Old Navy because they sometimes have some good stuff for good prices and in fact they did!  I think all of these were around $15.

The first is a kind of running singlet, it is super lightweight and loose fitting making it very comfy.  The 2 on the right have built in bras and then are really light and loose as well.  They are also really flattering on and super cute.  The only issue I have with those is that there is only one strap option to clip my IPod onto and it doesn’t like the thickness of them.  Although occasionally adjusting my IPod is a small price to pay for a super cute, super inexpensive, great running shirt.  I just wouldn’t use it for a race.

That’s the round up of the new stuff to try, I will be back to report how they are!

What do you wear to run in the summer?

Island Trail Run

Standard

New favorite running trail on Bainbridge Island.  I always loved Battle Point Park, it is a huge park with everything any kid ever wanted.  Playground, pond with ducks, trees, grass, multiple soccer, baseball, basketball, and tennis courts, picnic tables, and even a huge telescope up on the hill which is sometimes open to the public, there was also always a trail that ran around the perimeter of the park perfect for biking or running.  Now there’s another super cool aspect.  There is a trail that leads out of it and into the Grand Forest, which was my favorite little trail run/hiking place there.  The Grand Forest was already gorgeous and the new trail is perfection.  It’s called the Forest-to-Sky Trail (Love the name) and this is the start!  photo 2-21

To get to it, you walk through a hardly visible trail in the park (super insider secret) and go through a potion of the fence that’s been removed.

And now a little journey through the rest.  Some images are blurry.  Still working on slowing down enough to steady the camera.  Runner problems.

I fully intend on running this trail and the park every time I am on Bainbridge, next of which will be in June!  Get ready trail, I am very excited to see you again.

I am wondering now about finding more new trails where I live but that are also safe, used a lot, etc. etc.  Anyone have good trail websites?

Mother’s Day Surprise

Standard

Ah yes.  Ready to take off.  Why are everything bagels so underrated?  I seriously love them.  Especially toasted with cream cheese.

photo 1-20

I  went home for Mother’s day and my bro and I completely shocked my mom to speechlessness (is that a word?).  If you knew my mom, you’d know that was totally impossible and once in a lifetime.

Pretty sweet views leaving the bay.  It seems like they’re impossible to beat, but then again…. the view before landing was pretty amazing as well.

photo 2-19

Speaking of which, here’s the view right before landing.  Not only is it totally gorgeous, but it happened to be of Bainbridge Island and with the ferry that I would be taking to get there after I landed.  A parachute at this point in the flight would’ve saved me a lot of travel time.

photo 3-15

I love going back to Bainbridge.  It is so green and peaceful.

I also really loved this cloud.  How completely perfect!

photo 4-12

So my bro and I showed up unannounced and really got her confused by calling at the same time (from outside) so she had us each on one line and getting her thoroughly flustered before announcing, gosh this is confusing, let’s just talk in person, and then walking in.  Her face was priceless.  I don’t know why no one thought to snag a pic of the moment because I have never seen her so speechless.  It was pretty rad.  Also apparently I now have major brownie points with her friends and their kids are looking pretty sub par.  So that was kinda funny to hear.

More on my new favorite running trail on Bainbridge and some other stuff later!

How was your mother’s day?

Today was a Wonderful Day

Standard

I haven’t had a day off in a long time and I really need to have one so here’s a quick recap of the awesome day.  Slept in.  Headed into SF and got some super yummy coffee.

photo 1-17

I was really extra happy about it.

photo 2-16

Then went for a stroll on the beach.

photo 3-13

Put my toes in the chilly water.

photo 2-17

Saw some rad views including a little history (old site of Sutro baths).

photo 3-14

And saw my favorite thing to paint right now, colorful succulents.  This will likely become a painting one day soon.

photo 1-18

All of that was followed by a trip to my all time favorite store ever.  Sports Basement.  It’s the absolute best.  Oh yeah, and I had some Strauss Fro-yo in a cone.  Today really WAS a wonderful day.
