Long Run Podcast and Prep

Standard

Since I’ve got my long run on my mind, I thought I would talk about what I do to help get me through long runs.  I like to listen to Podcasts because then you get to listen to more like a story or a show while you’re out which can be more entertaining.  There are all types out there, I personally like a few morning shows, which I don’t get to listen to normally, so I subscribe to their podcasts and listen while I run.  They talk about news, and celebrities, nothing too thought provoking, but entertaining while running.  Here’s an example of one that I like a lot, probably my favorite:

That morning show also does a “secret show” which is a podcast you can subscribe to, but it is for 18 or older and so you can assume the content is different.  It is also entertaining, but isn’t for everyone.

The other thing I really like about my iPod is that it plays the radio!!  That way when I’m sick of my music or don’t feel like a podcast, I can just see what’s on.

In preparation for this morning’s long run, I made this very simple rice for dinner.  It was good, but the goal for a regular dinner is really to add stuff to it, which I didn’t do.  So it was a little boring but perfect for a pre-long runphoto

It looked like this:

Here’s what I’m having before I head out.

Are you doing a long run today?  How far?  Have fun!!

Naive and Happy!

Standard

I spent Thursday evening doing 2 miles of hill repeats and now i am sooooore.  But it’s the good kind of sore that we runners are obsessed with you know what I mean?

Friday was a 6 mile run with some pick-ups (little sections where I speed up which makes it a more interesting and gets a little speed work in).

Today it is completely pouring out but it’s my rest day anyways so it’s fine with me!  I’m hoping it clears up for tomorrow.  I need to get my last long run in before the half marathon next weekend.

I have to say I have a bit of bittersweet feelings about the course layout, and the fact that you park at the end and then shuttle to the start which basically means you have to be there and ready even earlier than usual.  The race starts at 6:30 am and I have to be in downtown SF, park in a garage and on a shuttle by 5:45 am at the very latest (that’s the last shuttle).  So all that means I am basically getting up at 3 am!  It’s going to be a tough one, but then of course, that’s partly why we all love races right?

Plus after all that I’ll of course be this naive and happy and ready to sign up for another race like I always am after races:

Adrian brought this home as a surprise the other night.  Sometimes he is so very wise!

Have you ever had to shuttle to the start of a race and get there so early??  Maybe I just don’t know that it’s somewhat normal!

No Fake Runners Here!

Standard

Oh yea, how awesome is that?? I absolutely love Kara Goucher.  She is just completely amazing and I love that she is the face of this awesome brand from my awesome home town city of Seattle.  Seeing this made my day a bit! Screen Shot 2014-03-20 at 4.38.21 PM

I ran a really slow easy 6 miles tonight.  It’s funny how I can go one day running 12 miles at a fairly good pace, then two days later sort of trudge through 6 miles.  Every day running is just different and there are so many other factors involved.  For example, I think I have my mental game face on when I know I’m doing a longer run, and so maybe that adds a lot, versus a night, where I just want to get 6 done and move on to pizza.  I could see that playing a huge role.  They say it’s half mental right?

Speaking of pizza…. We had pizza for dinner.  I had a double decker of cheese, Adrian had a double decker of pepperoni.  It’s actually much yummier than it looks….It’s kinda dry.

photo 1-4

I also had a salad.  I’m crazy for always getting some kind of nutrients in every meal.  Although my salad was really some lettuce and a ton of red cabbage.  I have a thing for red cabbage.

photo 2-4

After my “eh” run I did a nice peruse of the internet and came across this quote which made me feel better.  I’ve seen it before and it’s always one of my faves.Screen Shot 2014-03-26 at 11.53.58 PM

It’s nice to remember that sometimes.  Just get out there, do your thing, you’re a runner.

Lastly, my friend Alison stopped by tonight to say hi, hang, and catch up.  She’s fun and always has good stories and good things to say.  Also we all watched that funny first kiss video and analyzed it.  Do you know which video I mean?  It went viral like 2 weeks ago, of strangers put together and told to kiss.  Kinda interesting social experiment.  We thought so anyways.

Have you met any “fake runners”?  I haven’t!

Have you tried Oiselle?  What I’ve tried I totally loved, also love the bird, super cute.

12 Miler, Time to Rock

Standard

I went for a little more tropical smoothie for a little weekend change and I must say it hit the spot!
photo 2-3

I spent a lot of Sunday relaxing in my favorite spot with a few upgrades, the cozy pillows, as well as my water bottle (really always with me) and a good book.  Currently I’m reading The Glass Castle.

photo 1-3It was sort of a long weekend so I just had to have a calm day!  Also I was planning for a very long run this morning so I drank a lot of water and let my legs rest.

Also, the most important part of the night before a long run, is obviously going to a burger place with friends for dinner!  We went to Wheezy’s.  They make kinda smaller burgers, not quite slider small, but almost, so you can order a couple different kinds.  Of course I had 2 burgers and fries, veggie burgers of course.  And the best one they make, I promise, is called the White Trash burger with thousand island, crunchy iceberg lettuce, and american cheese.  It kinda tastes like a Big Mac.  So good.  Then of course we went to Fro Yo.  It was directly next to the restaurant, so I literally had no choice.

This morning I did 12 miles with an average pace of 8:36. YAY!!  I was so worried I wouldn’t be ready for my half marathon in 2 weeks, especially when the hamstring issue happened.  So now I feel so much better and ready to Rock n’ Roll!! ( haha get it? Rock n’ Roll half? yea I know my jokes aren’t good. )  I’m just so happy that I now feel ready.

I finished it off with a really easy yoga sesh tonight to stretch it out, and I’m about to go to bed because I am completely exhausted!

Also thanks for the comments about the morning running!! Glad I’m not alone and that we are not all superhuman morning rockstars, which is what I envision all runners, besides myself, to be.

Anyone else doing the Rock n’ Roll SF?  Other Rock n’ Roll races in different cities?

Morning Runners. Teach Me Your Ways!

Standard

Very Excited about my new warm weather/bright running gear!  I bought a few of that tank top.  It comes in lots of cute colors,is SUPER light weight, and has a built-in bra.  Downside, my clip-on iPod didn’t like that size strap as the only option very much, but we made it.photo 2-2

Yesterday was my first longish run since the hamstring has been acting up and I am so happy that it went well!!  I ran 8.5 miles, took it easy on pace, but had no pain! Hooray!

Here’s what I used to get me through it in the morning:

photo 1-2

So I have always always alllllways wanted to be one of those people that’s like “oh I got up at 5 and ran 12 miles, no big deal”.  But  I’m not.  My idea of an early run is before the sun goes down, not before it gets up.  But I’m on a mission to become one of those people.  I set out my clothes the night before.  I planned my breakfast.  I set my alarm (for 7, not 5).  Then I got up at 8…. hour late, whoops.  Then I ate/drank my breakfast.  Had to let it digest obviously….  Left at 10:30.  WHY, why, can’t I be one of those people!?

Then I thought, ok, get up early tomorrow and do the same, and it will feel easier.  But, I had a birthday party to go to at a concert and it didn’t end until midnight.  So much for that.  The band was awesome though!  It was an all female Led Zeppelin cover band name Zepparella.  Pretty fun.

How do you crazy morning people do it????

Festa Della Donna

Standard

I ran pretty hard on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and I was feeling it a bit, so I decided to give myself Friday and Saturday off.  It was exactly what I needed and I did some fun stuff during the little break!

On Friday night I got take-out from a place called Boo Koo that has Asian street food.  It’s one of my favorite spots and I think they have the absolute best Pad Thai, as seen below:

photo 1-5

Yum.  I could eat that again right now.

On Saturday we went on a hike to Alpine Lake which also has a very impressive dam.  It’s nice to see it flowing strong after all the rain we’ve had!

photo 2-4

On the way back from the hike, something caught our eye and we had to pull over to see what it was.  It was in fact a guy getting ready to paraglide off the side of the mountain.  He just jumped off!  It seemed to make no sense how he would do this but he literally just took a few steps and he was off the ground and away heading down toward Stinson Beach.  It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen.  Talk about right place at the right time.

Here he is getting ready and then one in the air.

photo 3.PNG

On Saturday we met up with some friends for dinner at an amazing restaurant called A16. They’re really well known for their Burrata and we didn’t want to let them down so we had to start with an order.photo 4-4

Also it turns out it was Festa Della Donna on Saturday which basically means Women’s Day.  We didn’t know until they told us at the restaurant why their wine list was specializing in women of wine.  After finding this out, I made sure to celebrate the day by kicking major tush at bowling and beating the boys at the last second for the win!!

I was “Wale”… it’s a long story

photo 5

Also you’ll notice after the strike when I realized I might win, I hit a gutter ball.  I got nervous.

I finished the weekend strong with an 8.5 mile run and some hearty pasta for dinner.  Looking forward to a productive week!

Anyone else know it was Women’s Day?

Have an especially good or bad weekend?

0.1 Miles Down!

Standard

I went out for an easy 6 mile run today in the nice-again weather!  There were a lot of people out on my normal path today.  A lot.  I must have forgotten what it’s like when the weather’s good!  When It’s rainy I only ever run by about 2 other people the whole time I’m out.  It’s kinda peaceful actually.

photo 3-4

We went out for pizza tonight at a really cute place called Tamalpie.  It’s a play on Mount Tamalpais right up above it.  We each ordered a pizza and shared an order of fries that came with aioli.  You can put aioli on anything and I’m in. It’s one of my favorite things.

I absolutely adore this picture!! I saw it from the Rock ‘n Roll series stuff they put out because I’m running their half in SF next month.  Now that is a runner and a positive person.  It’s joy in the little things and each step of the race!  Also I feel this way sometimes.  Overly excited for the small steps I make on runs.  I think it’s a good thing.
photo 1-3I’ve been getting really serious with the foam roller and rolling pin lately.  Best. Inventions. Ever.  It is the only thing keeping me not so incredibly sore.

What are your running plans for the weekend?
