The Day Before the Race

The day before a race is always fun.  There’s an expo to go to, an excuse to be lazy, carbs to eat, etc.

Usually the day before I do a quick little run, something fast, about 2 miles, to just loosen up my legs.  I went to the track on Friday night though, and did striders (lengthening your stride and having a bit of a quick pace), so I felt like I shouldn’t do more on Saturday.  So I just took it easy!  I also have read several times that since no one sleeps well the night before a race, you’re supposed to sleep as much as possible the night before to help be rested.  So I think I slept like 10 or 11 hours on Friday night and it was amazing.

I went to the expo on Saturday with my friend Alison and we took some silly pictures.  To spare you from all of them, I just picked my 2 favorite silly pictures.

And one normal one, that shows the crazy course we would take for 13.1 miles!!  I have to admit, it was really hard.  But I’ll write all about the actual race tomorrow.

I couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat for dinner on Saturday night because I know that’s important.  I kept thinking I would make the standard simple pasta type deal, but it just wasn’t sounding good!  Alison suggested a veggie burger and at first I thought that was a bad idea.  But, as it turned out I couldn’t think of anything else that sounded good so I went for it!  I seriously love The Counter.  They have such good burgers. Oh and I got a side of regular fries, because of course potatoes are a great carb source!

After this it was time to relax, and go to bed as early as possible for my 3 am wake up call!!  Off to the races!

I Guess I Better Carbo Load!

What better way to eat carbs than an insanely good dinner out at one of my favorite Italian restaurants.  I finally remembered to take a photo of how happy food makes me before I have demolished what’s been put in front of me, and even of the food before I scarfed it!!  (Not pictured, the 2 baskets of warm bread that we ate through, yes that makes 1 complete basket each, they came with yummy dipping sauce and we had to put burrata on it obviously, so it was out of our hands!)  photo 4-5

Check this tomato out!  I mean could it be any more beautiful?  It is a 4 hour tomato, meaning that is how long they cooked it.  It’s on top of pesto, burrata, and olive oil, and of course was promptly smothered over the top of some warm bread.

As crazy amazing as that tomato combo was, this gnocchi was actually the best.  It was the perfect consistency and they sautéed it, you could see the lightly browned edges.  I’ve never heard of doing that, and it was amazing.  Once again I just really want to try making gnocchi from scratch I just love it so much.photo 2-8

Sorry salad.  By yourself you would’ve been great, made of local baby gems which I love, parmesan, and homemade croutons, but when eaten in conjunction with the above amazingness, you were quite outplayed.  It’s not your fault, you had no chance!

I’ve had a really busy and stressful week and I am so excited to go join my fellow runners for a fun half marathon adventure through the city this weekend, and sleep a lot.

Taper Week

In honor of having just watched the last episode of The Walking Dead, this is quite hilarious.  (Yes I love that show, no judgement).  I love Brooks, they are so creative and funny!

It’s my taper week before the Rock n’ Roll SF half this Sunday.  So I am being very lazy and eating lots of carbs.  It’s my favorite week.  I didn’t run at all Monday or Tuesday, and ran a really slow 4 miles last night.  I have so much more time without planning out and doing runs!  Also it creates less laundry and I don’t have to worry about what I eat before running possibly hurting my tummy, so I can eat everything all the time!  There’s lots of perks!  But, I also wouldn’t stop running for anything.  It’s my favorite thing ever.

I am getting very excited about the expo this weekend.  I am going with a friend of mine because I told her there’s free samples and we would go to lunch after, and who doesn’t love free stuff and lunch?  I mean I have to go out to lunch to get all my carbs obviously.

What do you eat before a race?  The day before? The morning of?  I always struggle with exactly the right combo.

13 Miler, Plus 4 More

I feel it is important to note that our kitten is so smart that she watched (and cheered) as Belt hit and scored his very important home run in tonight’s game.  She’s a huge giants fan.

I had a crazy day of outdoor activity yesterday.  Possibly too much since I’m still exhausted.  I ran 13.17 miles in the morning (I really wanted to get that .1 in there for half marathon training purposes).  I took it really easy, and even stopped a couple times at water fountains to grab a drink and a quick stretch.  I ran from around 10-12, because I still don’t know how to run first thing before it’s hot out.  So I needed those breaks to hydrate and cool down.  I also made it a slow pace run because I am still just monitoring my left leg, it’s just had a few weird things goin on lately.

I only had a banana, some chews, and coffee before, as well as 2 gels along the route so I was starving when I got back (I am currently obsessed with Honey Stinger products so I used all their stuff for the chews and gels).  When I was back I made an egg and cheese bagel with some leftover pico de gallo, which was a rad extra, as well as a chocolate milk.  I could have had much more, but I knew I had other plans involving food to follow shortly….

We met up with a friend for a hike/picnic.  This was what made me clearly an insane person.  Who agrees to go hiking after running 13 miles?  Well…. me.  So add another 4 miles to that original 13 for total distance.  We went to Tennessee Valley and packed sandwiches, snacks, and a water bottle of wine because we felt festive.  Here we are about to head back after.

This is really the most important, the view including the food.  As usual, I think awesome food tastes even more amazing when eaten in a cool place.  Also I think it’s important to point out that those bbq chips went ON my sandwich.  This is something I have always done, and always will do.  It is the absolute best way to eat a sandwich.

Long Run Podcast and Prep

Since I’ve got my long run on my mind, I thought I would talk about what I do to help get me through long runs.  I like to listen to Podcasts because then you get to listen to more like a story or a show while you’re out which can be more entertaining.  There are all types out there, I personally like a few morning shows, which I don’t get to listen to normally, so I subscribe to their podcasts and listen while I run.  They talk about news, and celebrities, nothing too thought provoking, but entertaining while running.  Here’s an example of one that I like a lot, probably my favorite:

That morning show also does a “secret show” which is a podcast you can subscribe to, but it is for 18 or older and so you can assume the content is different.  It is also entertaining, but isn’t for everyone.

The other thing I really like about my iPod is that it plays the radio!!  That way when I’m sick of my music or don’t feel like a podcast, I can just see what’s on.

In preparation for this morning’s long run, I made this very simple rice for dinner.  It was good, but the goal for a regular dinner is really to add stuff to it, which I didn’t do.  So it was a little boring but perfect for a pre-long runphoto

Naive and Happy!

I spent Thursday evening doing 2 miles of hill repeats and now i am sooooore.  But it’s the good kind of sore that we runners are obsessed with you know what I mean?

Friday was a 6 mile run with some pick-ups (little sections where I speed up which makes it a more interesting and gets a little speed work in).

Today it is completely pouring out but it’s my rest day anyways so it’s fine with me!  I’m hoping it clears up for tomorrow.  I need to get my last long run in before the half marathon next weekend.

I have to say I have a bit of bittersweet feelings about the course layout, and the fact that you park at the end and then shuttle to the start which basically means you have to be there and ready even earlier than usual.  The race starts at 6:30 am and I have to be in downtown SF, park in a garage and on a shuttle by 5:45 am at the very latest (that’s the last shuttle).  So all that means I am basically getting up at 3 am!  It’s going to be a tough one, but then of course, that’s partly why we all love races right?

Plus after all that I’ll of course be this naive and happy and ready to sign up for another race like I always am after races:

Have you ever had to shuttle to the start of a race and get there so early??  Maybe I just don’t know that it’s somewhat normal!

No Fake Runners Here!

Oh yea, how awesome is that?? I absolutely love Kara Goucher.  She is just completely amazing and I love that she is the face of this awesome brand from my awesome home town city of Seattle.  Seeing this made my day a bit! Screen Shot 2014-03-20 at 4.38.21 PM

I ran a really slow easy 6 miles tonight.  It’s funny how I can go one day running 12 miles at a fairly good pace, then two days later sort of trudge through 6 miles.  Every day running is just different and there are so many other factors involved.  For example, I think I have my mental game face on when I know I’m doing a longer run, and so maybe that adds a lot, versus a night, where I just want to get 6 done and move on to pizza.  I could see that playing a huge role.  They say it’s half mental right?

Speaking of pizza…. We had pizza for dinner.  I had a double decker of cheese, Adrian had a double decker of pepperoni.  It’s actually much yummier than it looks….It’s kinda dry.

I also had a salad.  I’m crazy for always getting some kind of nutrients in every meal.  Although my salad was really some lettuce and a ton of red cabbage.  I have a thing for red cabbage.

After my “eh” run I did a nice peruse of the internet and came across this quote which made me feel better.  I’ve seen it before and it’s always one of my faves.Screen Shot 2014-03-26 at 11.53.58 PM

It’s nice to remember that sometimes.  Just get out there, do your thing, you’re a runner.

Lastly, my friend Alison stopped by tonight to say hi, hang, and catch up.  She’s fun and always has good stories and good things to say.  Also we all watched that funny first kiss video and analyzed it.  Do you know which video I mean?  It went viral like 2 weeks ago, of strangers put together and told to kiss.  Kinda interesting social experiment.  We thought so anyways.
